June water. Sea temperature 17–19 °C. Mornings are calm and clean; the nortada (north wind) kicks in early afternoon, brilliant for sailing and kite, miserable for SUP.

Top picks

Learn to surf at Carcavelos

2 stops by train · €€ · Beginner

The broad, sandy-bottom beach two train stops east. Forgiving, lifeguarded, and lined with surf schools — Carcavelos Surf School and Angels Surf School both run group lessons in English, June through September.

Practical: 2 hr group lesson ~€35. Train from Cascais to Carcavelos.

Guincho — wind, waves, sand

8 km bus / cycle · €€€ · Advanced

World-class kitesurfing and windsurfing in the afternoon. Surfable in the morning when the wind is down. Cold, raw, and beautiful — this is the wild beach. Not the place for absolute beginners.

Practical: Moana surf school for lessons; Beach Rider for kite.

SUP in the bay

Praia da Rainha · €€ · All levels

The sheltered bay in front of town is ideal for stand-up paddle — flat, warm-ish, no swell. Rent a board from one of the seafront kiosks, paddle west to the lighthouse and back. About 90 minutes.

Practical: ~€15/hour. Go before 11 am for glass.

Kayak to Boca do Inferno

Marina de Cascais · €€ · Guided

A two-hour guided sea-kayak tour along the cliffs to Boca do Inferno and back. Different (and better) view than from land — and you'll see caves only reachable from the water.

Practical: book the morning slot; afternoon wind kills it.

Sailing — Marina de Cascais

Marina · €€€ · Half day

Cascais is a serious sailing town — Olympic training base, regatta calendar. Charter a half-day skippered sail in the bay for ~€60 pp; or take a Royal Yachting Association course if you're staying a couple of weeks.

Practical: Try CNC (Clube Naval de Cascais) for entry-level options.

Scuba at Avencas reef

Parede · €€€ · Certified divers

A small protected reef one train stop east. Visibility is moderate (5–10 m), the marine life surprising — octopus, moray, stingrays. Dive centres in Cascais do guided two-tank trips.

Practical: bring a wetsuit; PADI Open Water cert required.

Beach-by-beach quick guide

  • Praia da Rainha / Praia da Conceição / Praia da Duquesa — the in-town beaches; calm bay, busy, easy.
  • Carcavelos — the big sandy beach for swimming and learning to surf.
  • Guincho — wild, windy, dramatic. Wave & kite. Cold.
  • Praia do Tamariz (Estoril) — sheltered, family-friendly, café-lined.
  • Adraga & Magoito (Sintra coast) — quieter cliff-backed beaches if you have a car.

Safety

  • Swim only at lifeguarded beaches (flag system: green/yellow/red). The Atlantic rip currents are real.
  • UV is high. Sunscreen at 09:00, again after every swim.
  • Don't underestimate water temperature — it can drop with upwelling. Wetsuit if you're in for more than 30 min.
